TRON 2.0 - 10th Anniversary

By TronFAQ on Monday, August 26, 2013 at 9:03 PM
On August 26th, 2003 TRON 2.0 was released for sale in North America, a video game published by Buena Vista Interactive (now simply known as Disney Games) and developed by Monolith Productions for the PC. Today is the 10th Anniversary of that release.

To mark the occasion, Kain-Xavier has publicly announced a plugin he's been working on for Blender, which will allow you to make your own models for TRON 2.0.

Up until now, you would have to use very old versions of the Max and Maya modelling programs, which cost money and/or are hard to obtain because of their age. (The model plugins that came with the TRON 2.0 editing tools, will only work on those older versions of Max and Maya.)

The Blender plugin isn't ready for release just yet, but it's gotten to the point where it's almost completely functional. So it shouldn't be too much longer. Congratulations to Kain-Xavier on his accomplishment. :)

There was something else I had planned for today, but unfortunately it's not ready to show yet. :( Can you guess what it is? Maybe within the next couple of weeks . . .

May I guess? I'm going to guess UE 3.0.

First, let me congratulate you and everyone at LDSO for your continued and unwavering support for the TRON 2.0 computer game. I enjoyed the game thoroughly and still consider the game to be the true successor to the first TRON movie.

However, might I make a suggestion? Have you and the organization that you belong to considered developing your own TRON-like FPS without the IP issues? It seems that what is holding the TRON 2.0 community back is the lack of a robust SDK for the TRON 2.0 computer game. As a result, community development of the game has been considerably stifled.

By developing a TRON-like game without the IP issues, community involvement would be greatly increased and enthusiasts would be able to have greater control over their creation.

If you need an example of a gaming community taking charge, I recommend the Thief community and "The Dark Mod" project. Granted, there are several available FPS engines for use and id Tech 3 (DOOM 3) is just one of them.

Good luck with the continued development of UE 3 and here is hoping that someone capable allows the TRON IP to flourish as it deserves to be.

Nope, the other announcement was going to be about the Killer App Mod. But there's still some work to be done on that. There will be further announcements about UE3 as well, though.

We've thought about using a different engine and creating a TRON-like game. Unity, UDK, id Tech, etc. It would certainly eliminate a number of limitations, right away. And we might still do something like that, later.

But, we would prefer to use the actual TRON IP, and in order to do that it basically means we have to make a mod for one of the existing TRON games released by Disney.

Another reason we do what we do, is simply for the challenge. It's easy to use a ready-made solution like Unity, and make something with it. But how many people can claim they made something significant for a game like TRON 2.0? Overcoming the limitations in creative ways is rewarding to us.

The Dark Mod is indeed a very good example of a community successfully producing a game inspired by another IP. They've done impressive work. In fact, I'm certain the Dark Mod will be better than the next official Thief game, which is looking pretty bad at the moment . . .
